Standard Homeopathic Company has issued a nationwide voluntary recall of all lots of their Hyland’s Baby Teething Tablets and Hyland’s Baby Nighttime Teething Tablets due to the presence of belladonna in these products. The homeopathic teething tablets containing belladonna can pose an unnecessary risk to infants and children and urges consumers not to use these products.
What is Belladonna?
Belladonna is a plant, whose leaves and roots are usually used to make medicine. Though widely regarded as unsafe, belladonna has many useful purposes – from treating motion sickness to Parkinson’s disease.
Belladonna produces many effects in the body, including relief from spasms of the gastrointestinal tract, bladder and biliary tract. This is helpful in controlling conditions such as colitis, spastic bladder, diverticulitis, infant colic, renal and biliary colic, peptic ulcer, and irritable bowel syndrome.
Belladonna also reduces the secretions of many organs, thereby helping to control conditions such as excessive stomach acid production.
