What is a Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a science of life that was developed in India more than 5,000 years ago. It is a system of preventive medicine and health care that translates to the science and knowledge of life in Sanskrit.

Ayurveda is a system based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body and soul. The theory of Ayurveda is that everything in the universe is interconnected, both living and non-living. It is believed that good health can be achieved when your mind, body, and spirit are in harmony with the universe. Disruptions of this harmony such as injuries, age, emotions, genetic or birth defects, climate and seasonal changes can lead to poor health and sickness.

According to the Ayurveda theory, each of us is made of a combination of five basic elements found in the universe – space, air, fire, water and earth. These elements combine in the human body to form three life forces or energies called doshas – vata dosha (space and air), pitta dosha (fire and water), and kapha dosha (water and earth). They control how your body works and everyone inherits a unique mix of the three doshas. Typically, one dosha is more dominant than the others and each dosha controls a different bodily function. It is believed that your chances of getting sick are linked to the balance of your doshas. Hence, an ayurveda treatment is designed to help you restore balance to your body to promote good health and boost your immunity.
